The move-out cleaning is one of the cheapest investments you can make in getting your full security deposit back, or in handing over a property that satisfies your lease cleanly. But the cleaning is only as good as the prep β and there’s a right way and a wrong way to set up for it. Here’s the prep playbook we send our move-out clients.
Quick answer: schedule the cleaning for the day after the moving truck leaves. Empty the fridge, defrost the freezer, empty all cabinets and closets, take all belongings out, and make sure utilities are still on. You don’t need to clean anything yourself.
Step 1 β Schedule the Cleaning Correctly
The single biggest mistake people make is scheduling the cleaning while their stuff is still in the home. We can’t properly clean what we can’t see or reach. So:
- Schedule the move-out clean for the day after the moving truck leaves
- Build in at least one full day buffer between move-out and your handover deadline
- Book us as far in advance as possible β peak moving seasons (MayβAugust, December) fill up fast
- Tell us if you have a hard deadline (lease end, closing date) so we can prioritize accordingly
Step 2 β Empty Everything
The home should be completely empty when we arrive. That means:
- All furniture removed
- All personal belongings out of every room
- Closets emptied β including upper shelves and floor
- Cabinets and drawers emptied throughout the house
- Garage cleared
- Outdoor areas cleared of any belongings
